A major construction and renovation project at Parkland High School remains below its original budget estimate, district officials reported during the Aug. 18 school board meeting.

Arthur Oakes, the district’s director of facilities and operations, said current construction costs are estimated at $49.9 million, compared with the original projection of $51.7 million.

Including soft costs and highway occupancy work, the total project cost is estimated at $63 million, down from the original estimate of $64.1 million.

Oakes said the district recently learned that a 24-inch sewer line installed when the school was built must be replaced with a required 30-inch line. The work will cost about $140,663 and includes 304 feet of pipe.

He also reported a remaining right of way issue involving PennDOT that dates to the school’s 1999 construction project.

In other business, the board approved an agreement with Szoke to upsize steel columns for the high school addition at a cost of $211,861.

Oakes said about $9.6 million in work has been completed, placing the project at roughly 19% completion.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson said the board’s next update is expected in October.

“At that time, we will have more information about the wastewater treatment plant, roadwork and PennDOT matters,” Madson said.
