I visited George Schmidt Berry Farm and met with the owners George and Dawn Schmidt this past weekend.

George is the third generation to own the farm.

It was purchased in 1942 by his grandfather, also named George.

George planted the first blueberry bushes in 1948 and the farm was opened for pick your own in the late 1960s.

The farm is located at 5681 Berry Drive in New Tripoli.

The farm and stand is operated mostly by family and family friends.

The farm also offers pick your own strawberries, cherries, and blueberries.

Strawberry season starts in the beginning of June and goes until about the end of June followed by cherries and then blueberries come in around the 4th of July.

Blueberries are their biggest crop.

They have 13 acres of blueberry bushes and 4 acres of strawberry fields.

They have a stand that offers these items already picked, as well as seasonal vegetables, and their own sweet corn.

They also grow their own peaches and apples.

They offer other local products at the stand such as baked goods from the Buttered Crumb, homemade sourdough bread from Dough-renda’s Daily Bread and Baked Goods (you can contact her to order on Facebook or call 484-553-3565), honey from Black Hat Honey, chicken eggs from Karen Bowman, and duck eggs and fresh flowers from Little Blue Coop, and Charcoal Jeff Walck.

The stand usually opens around Memorial Day and is open until Labor day but sells apples after the stand closes.

Business hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and are open the summer holidays 9 a.m.-3 p.m. as well.

They do offer seconds for baking and sauce and some neck pumpkins for baking.
