Parkland to perform ‘Shakespeare in Love’
William Shakespeare finds himself in trouble in that he’s broke and lost his inspiration.
That is the theme for the Parkland High School Theater Department’s presentation of “Shakespeare in Love.”
The play is about the inspiration of art and the challenge of stepping out, as does Lila Furst as Viola De Lesseps/Thomas Kent.
As a woman, Viola is forbidden to perform on stage in England during the Renaissance era.
However, she dresses as a man and also wears a false mustache to mask her appearance.
She also falls in love with Shakespeare, played by Jordan Silver, complicating the already confusing situation.
Because of Viola, Shakespeare has become inspired and written “Romeo and Juliet” with Viola playing Thomas Kent.
During the play, she is unmasked, and has to marry the Lord Wessex, played by Matthew Hauck.
However, Queen Elizabeth is attending the play and gives her blessing to Viola, ending the prohibition of women on stage in England.
Despite this approval, Viola still has to stay married to Lord Wessex and departs for America as the play draws to a close, but not before Shakespeare is inspired to write “The Tempest.”
“Shakespeare in Love” will be performed 7 p.m. Oct. 16 and 17 and 3 p.m. Oct. 18 in the high school auditorium.
