South Whitehall Township will hold special meetings of three advisory boards Sept. 9 at Parkland High School to review Project Atlas, a proposed 1.52 million-square-foot data center campus that remains under township review following months of public debate and multiple rounds of review.

According to an announcement sent by the township, the Park and Recreation Board, Environmental Advisory Council and Landscape and Shade Tree Commission are scheduled to meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 9 at Parkland High School, 2700 N. Cedar Crest Blvd., to discuss the proposal and provide recommendations to township officials. The meetings will be open to the public and will include opportunities for public comment.

Township officials said the three bodies serve only in an advisory capacity and that their recommendations will not constitute approval or denial of the project.

As of Aug. 24, agendas for the Sept. 9 meetings had not been posted. The township’s notice states that additional meeting information will be provided in a forthcoming public meeting notice. While the township routinely posts agendas and meeting packets for many of its boards and commissions, details regarding the format of the Sept. 9 meetings had not yet been released.

Project Atlas is a resubmission for preliminary land development plan review of a proposed data center campus at 2493 N. Cedar Crest Blvd. The project encompasses three parcels totaling approximately 410.65 acres that would be consolidated into a single tract. Plans call for three principal data center buildings, one accessory structure and improvements to an existing cell tower, for a total building area of about 1.52 million square feet.

The roperty is located in the township’s Industrial District and within the Planned Innovation, Research and Technology District. The applicant, CDE Acquisitions LLC, is seeking to utilize provisions of the township’s PIRT Overlay District for the project. Jeras Corp. owns the property.

The proposal has drawn significant public attention and opposition since first entering the township review process. Residents have raised concerns about the project’s proximity to Parkland High School, potential effects on electrical infrastructure, traffic impacts and the compatibility of a large-scale data center complex with surrounding neighborhoods.

Some residents have questioned whether the proposal had been withdrawn. However, the application remains active. In July, South Whitehall announced that Project Atlas would not be discussed at a regularly scheduled Planning Commission meeting and instead would be reviewed at a special meeting because of the substantial public interest generated by the proposal. The township also reported that the current deadline to act on the plan is Oct. 31.

A separate special meeting of the South Whitehall Township Planning Commission is expected to be held Sept. 23 at Parkland High School. Township officials have said additional information regarding that meeting and public participation procedures will be released at a later date.

For now, the Sept. 9 sessions represent the next public step in the township’s review process, allowing advisory boards and residents to weigh in before the proposal returns to the Planning Commission for further consideration.
