Ice cream vendors scoop cooling treats close to home

Move over, Dairy Queen. Two new ice cream shops are scooping up customers looking to cool off with the popular delicious treat.

In Orefield, the Tin Rooster features 30 flavors from traditional favorites like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry to more trendy flavors like peanut butter overload and salted caramel pretzel.

“Cookie jar is one of our most popular flavors,” said Ava Marth with scoop in hand. “I’ve never seen any other place feature that flavor.”

The addition of Biscoff and Oreo cookies makes this different from cookie dough.

A steady stream of customers kept Marth and coworker Addison Subjin busy.

“I love working here,” Subjin said. “I get to talk to so many people.”

“Sunday is probably our busiest day,” Marth said.

The Tin Rooster Creamery prides itself on using only locally sourced ingredients.

That’s exactly what keeps customers like Jillian Heymach coming back.

“I love coming to a family run business,” she said, as she purchased peanut butter overload. “You can’t get any more fresh than this.”

The Tin Rooster also features locally raised beef, fresh vegetables, including sweet corn, baked goods and other Pennsylvania food items.

Less than ten minutes away, in New Tripoli, the Nesting Box has blossomed into a full-blown shop.

Customers can enjoy a small-batch, locally made ice cream in flavors ranging from lemon blueberry to salted caramel Oreo to peanut butter blast.

According to WFMZ, Timi and Keith Bauscher “established Nesting Box in 2016 as a cage-free egg farm in the Kempton section of Albany Township.”

After opening their new, expanded farm store in October, they started making hardpack artisan ice cream.

“All of this ice cream is homemade,” Rachel Connors said, a special-education teacher at Weisenberg Elementary School who works at the Nesting Box as a side hustle. “Timi [Bauscher] makes it all.”

“The cookie dough is incredible, but so is the caramel heath bars,” she continued, while scooping some ice cream. “Timi makes new flavors every day.”

Laura Leo and her family were at the Nesting Box on a busy Thursday night.

“I really like it here. They did a good job,” said Leo whose favorite flavor is chocolate marshmallow.

Nesting Box fans can also find the tasty treat at several local stops including Wanamaker’s General Store, Bear Rock Junction and Thunderhead Lodge.

Gracie Scheffler has been working at the Nesting Box since mid-May.

“I love working here,” she said. “I recognize a lot of customers, and the people here are really great. It’s a very nice family.”

“We opened last September,” said Ava Marth, who works part time at the Tin Rooster. “It’s always been about [the creamery and] the whole store.”
Jillian Heymach lives in Bath but stops for ice cream whenever she is in the area.

A rising junior at Northwestern, Addison Subjin had high praise for the Wessner Family business, the Tin Rooster.
“The secret of our ice cream is that it’s the highest milk fat you can get,” Timi Bausher said in an interview about the Nesting Box creamery.
