Balanced offense helps Trojan boys advance

The Parkland boys basketball team got balanced scoring in its first-round state playoff win.

Four Trojans finished in double figures in scoring in a 65-35 win over the District 1’s 10th place team Plymouth Whitemarsh Saturday afternoon in a PIAA 6A State Tournament game at Parkland High School.

Jayden Thomas recorded a game-high 20 points and both Robbie Ruisch and Zaire Smaltz tallied 17 points and collected 10 rebounds for a double-double. The team’s leading scorer and league MVP Nick Coval scored 11 points as those four players did all of Parkland’s scoring in the game.

The final score wasn’t indicative of how close the game was through the first quarter.

Parkland trailed 7-6 before scoring the quarter’s final six points to lead 12-7 after one. The Trojans had a strong second quarter, outscoring the Colonials 21-12 to go into halftime on top 33-19.

The advantage never dipped below nine the rest of the way as Parkland scored 15 of the final 17 points of the third quarter to go up big.

Parkland, which improved its record to 23-5 overall, advanced to face District 3’s second-place team, Chambersburg in the second round Wednesday. That game was played after Press deadline. The winner moves on to Saturday’s state quarterfinals against either District 12 champ Roman Catholic or District 1’s third-place team West Chester Henderson.
