Kuhnsville Lions honor Moyer with Melvin Jones Award
The Kuhnsville Area Lions Club recently honored longtime member Lawrence S. Moyer with the Melvin Jones Award.
Moyer, of Fogelsville, received the honor on April 3 at the Starlite Diner in Upper Macungie Township.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest form of recognition a Lion Club member can receive for his or her charitable work.
The award is named after a Chicago business leader Melvin Jones.
Moyer was chosen this year's recipient for his outstanding enthusiasm and Lion's spirit as club president, his dedication to the Lions Club with 25 consecutive years of perfect attendance and his willingness to accept any job needing to be done for the club.
Moyer is a 28-year charter member of the club. He has served as president three times and held most of the other positions and chairs during his membership, including chairman of the club's chicken barbecue sales for many years.
Moyer also contributes by storing and maintaining club equipment year after year and playing Santa Claus at the club's Christmas parties for blind and deaf guests.
He has served on the St. John's United Church of Christ consistory for the past 16 years, helping make decisions to best serve the church and community. In 2002, he became an elder of the church and was the co-leader of the church youth group from 2000-04.
The youth group's community service project was the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Many fundraisers were held, from bake sales to spaghetti dinners to Joe Corbi pizza, raising $800 to $1,500 over the course of four years.
Moyer also helped with the YMCA Sharks Swim Team with which his daughter, Nicole, competed from 1996-99.
He also attended training sessions on how to watch for proper stroke techniques, later volunteering his time as a referee and timer at the swim meets.
