A 17-year-old has been charged as an adult for the May 28 shooting of a 74-year-old man in Whitehall.
Fernando Guerrero Tabera died at the scene in the 5100 block of Third Street, Cementon. Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio said Tabera died from gunshot injuries and ruled his death a homicide.
According to reports, Elijah Ceballos, a resident of the same area of Cementon, allegedly shot Tabera as he was sitting on his son’s porch approximately 5 p.m. May 28. Emergency responders arrived to find Tabera had gunshot wounds to his torso, leg and chin, according to court documents.
According to reports, Ceballos’ father helped Whitehall Township police identify his son and allowed the family’s home to be searched.
Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan said a weapon matching the gun involved in the shooting and clothing believed to be worn by Ceballos were found in the home.
Whitehall Township police took Ceballos into custody. He has been charged with criminal homicide and for carrying a firearm without a license, both felonies, as well as possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors.
Whitehall Township Police Department, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate and work to determine a motive for the shooting.
Cabellos appeared May 29 before Magisterial District Judge Todd P. Heffelfinger, who denied his bail and ordered him to Lehigh County Jail.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 3.
