LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay off to slow start

It's fair to say that the start of the 2013 Lehigh Valley Legion season for manager Louis Falco has been very frustrating.

The team is currently 2-7, placing them firmly in the ninth spot of the 10-team league.

"It's very disappointing," said Falco who is getting ready for a hectic week with his team scheduled to play four games in the next six days.

The source of that disappointment stems from a number of areas. Falco said the team is suffering from too many mental mistakes on the base paths. That's further compounded by their lack of consistency executing the fundamentals. Finally, a lack of commitment as events and vacations pull players away from Legion baseball has also impacted their success.

"It's hard when you can't get players to show up," said Falco.

Falco said that their pitching staff has been their saving grace, as Dan Lloyd, Matthew Hassick and Tyler Sweeney have been a guiding force the season. The staff has combined to post a 1.88 ERA so far this season.

"They're keeping us in games," said Falco.

Falco would like to see a higher degree of dedication among his players, noting some games they take the field with a bare bones roster.

Lloyd was recently selected to the 2013 LVL All-Star team as a pitcher. He'll be joined by teammates Khristian Polanco (outfield) and Sweeney (shortstop) when they take on the Schuylkill-Berks Legion All-Stars Monday, June 24, at First Energy Field in Reading.

Polanco is currently batting .444, while Sweeney is hitting .300 for Coplay. Additionally, catcher Vincent Cuvo is batting .300, while outfielder Richard Yost is hitting .333.

Still, Falco said that their offense needs to get a boost if they expect to get back into the playoff hunt. They're currently batting .227 as a team, and have averaged just a little over three runs in their last five games.

However, the potential for a good season is within their grasp because Falco knows they could be a very good team. He just wants to see them pay attention to fundamentals, be smart on then base paths, and show a level of commitment to the team that will push them up the standings.
