Board of education OKs auction sale of school items Sept. 19

Northampton Area School District Board of Education voted 9-0 at its June 15 meeting to approve a contract for Houser Auctioneers, 4645 Penn Hill Drive, Schnecksville, to hold a public auction for the sale of district items.

According to the Houser Auctioneers website, houserauctioneers.com, the auction will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 19 in the NASD maintenance facility, 100 Held Drive, Northampton.

The auction is because of the closing of the Washington Technology Center, district administration building, Franklin Elementary School and Moore Elementary School.

According to the Houser Auctioneers website, items to be sold are “excess equipment,” including a large amount of kitchen equipment, Hobart slicer, portable stage/production equipment, commercial mowers, blowers, plows, stereo and audiovisual equipment, tandem axle trailer, golf carts and a Ford cruiser car.

The website states, “All equipment is in outstanding condition. Full models and descriptions will be added. As always, no buyers’ premiums. Terms are cash, preapproved checks with no premiums. Credit cards add 5%.”

For more information, call Doug or Tim Houser, associate auctioneers, at 610-799-2396 or 570-386-2191.

In other business at the June 15 meeting, school directors voted 6-3 to approve a two-year service agreement with Johnson Controls Inc., as recommended by the administration, for district heating, ventilation and air conditioning system controls and the migration and server to a virtual service, effective July 1-June 30, 2028.

The migration of the server is necessitated by the opening of East Allen Elementary School and the technology center and administration building.

Details of the two-year agreement and previous agreements and their status with Johnson Controls Inc. were stated on the June 15 meeting agenda.

Yearly total annual dollar amount:

• Year one (July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024): $21,500 semiannual — completed

• Year two (July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025): $24,811 semiannual — completed

• Year three (July 1, 2025-June 30, 2026): $25,556 semiannual — completed

• Year four (July 1, 2026-June 30, 2027): $42,175 semiannual — virtual sever migration onetime costs, virtual sever maintenance, East Allen, service costs increase. Moore service cost removed.

• Year five (July 1, 2027-June 30, 2028): $38,450 semiannual — onetime virtual server migration costs removed. This price is for system service and virtual server maintenance.

Voting to approve the Johnson Controls contract were school board President James Becker, Vice President David Gogel and school Directors Dr. Michael Baird, Ross Makary, Jamie Marchiano and Fran Shehab. Voting to not approve the contract were school Directors Joshua Harris, Zachary Kromer and Kristin Soldridge.

Harris, who is on the facilities committee, raised objections to the new contract at the May 18 school board facilities committee meeting.

At the facilities committee meeting, Jonathan Jenny, NASD director of operations, said the district HVAC system is being upgraded and will have remote-control capabilities. Harris cited the increased cost of the contract.

“Is it cost effective?” Harris asked.

The next school board meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. July 20 in the auditorium at Northampton Area High School, 1619 Laubach Ave., Northampton.
