Mustangs look to secure LVCM playoff spot

The Lower Macungie Senior Connie Mack baseball team finished the month of June with some positive momentum, winning two of its final three games to stay in the running for a postseason position.

After 12 days off without a game, the Mustangs got back in the win column with a 1-0 victory against Forks Township last Wednesday. Two nights later Lower Mac fell to Franklin Township 16-10, but responded with a 12-2, five-inning win over Pen Argyl/Bangor Monday.

In the victory against Forks, the lone run came on a triple by Chase Evans in the bottom of the fourth inning that scored Dominic Gasper.

The Mustangs finished with five hits, two of which came from Gasper. Evans, Daniel Rusiecki and Owen Herrity had the other hits. Luke Harris started on the mound and earned the victory, throwing four innings and striking out three while allowing no runs.

In a high-scoring game against Franklin Township, Lower Mac never led, falling behind 2-0 after one inning and 6-1 following two innings.

The Mustangs finished with nine hits, led by two each from Herrity, Harris, Chase Belzecky and Ryan Knight. Belzecky added four RBI and both Harris and Knight had one. Logan Kershner had the other hit for LM.

In the win over Pen Argyl/Bangor, the Mustangs took a 1-0 advantage with a run in the bottom of the second inning, but then fell behind 2-1 after the visitors responded with a two-run top of the third.

The game took a turn back towards the hosts in a big way as Lower Macungie brought home 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth and then got three outs in the top of the fifth inning to end the game via mercy rule.

Ryley George and Belzecky both finished with two hits and scored two runs, with Belzecky adding two RBI.

Gasper, Evans, Justin Spagna and Dalton Tabako each contributed one hit. Rusiecki recorded two RBI and scored a run.

Tabako also threw a complete game on the mound, allowing five hits and two unearned runs, while striking out eight for the win.

Lower Mac improved to 7-3-3- overall with four games left in the regular season. The Mustangs host Palmerton Wednesday and are at Northern Lehigh and Moore Township on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

They conclude the regular season at Hellertown on Monday night.

Southern Lehigh (14-0) remained unbeaten and atop the league standings through Monday’s games.

Northampton (11-2-1), East Stroudsburg (10-3), Forks (10-3) and Lehigh Bethlehem (9-2) round out the top five, with North Parkland (11-4), Franklin Township (10-4) and Lower Mac (7-3-3) making up the rest of the top eight.

Eight teams will advance to the Lehigh Valley Senior Connie Mack playoffs later this month. South Parkland (8-6) and Nazareth (8-6-1) are just outside the top eight, with Hellertown (7-7) and Silver Creek (7-8) also close behind in the 20-team league.
