LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LM falls to SP, beats W-C

Lower Macungie enters the final week of the Lehigh Valley Legion season just one and a half games behind first place South Parkland in the standings.

The Mustangs missed an opportunity when they lost to the Trojans last week, but they have another shot at the top team.

In their most recent meeting, which took place last Wednesday, June 24, at Church Lane, SP cruised to a 7-1 win.

Cameron Pengelly had two of Lower Mac’s three hits in the loss and Aaron Fleetwood had the other. Both players had a double among their hits and Fleetwood also scored the lone run when he crossed the plate on a groundball by Chase Simmons in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Trojan starter Mack Parsell pitched all seven innings for the win.

Simmons also provided two innings of shutout relief pitching and Dylan Freed was perfect in his one inning of work to give the Mustang offense the chance to get back into the ball game.

The game kicked off a stretch of three games in three days, giving Lower Macungie no time to sulk.

The Mustangs came back the next day to edge Whitehall-Coplay, 7-6, with Robbie Barnes and Jaxson Burton both picking up two hits and an RBI. Burton also walked and scored a run in the win, while Barnes stole a pair of bases. Seven different players had a hit in the game and seven players scored runs for the Mustangs, which took advantage of four Whitehall-Coplay errors to score three unearned runs.

The Mustangs scored three times in the top of the seventh to get the win.

Jack Sparango hit a groundball to third that was ruled an error but brought in a run and Leonardo Soto’s infield single brought in another run to tie the game at six. Sparango later scored on a wild pitch to give Lower Macungie a 7-6 lead. All of the scoring took place with two outs.

Dylan Freed threw three innings of shutout relief to get the win in the game, allowing just two hits and striking out three hitters in the game.

Lower Macungie wrapped up its three-game stretch with a win over Salisbury, 12-2.

Lower Macungie scored its 12 runs on 12 hits. Four players – Fleetwood, Pengelly, Soto and Cole Moreau – all had two hits in the win.

Burton put together an unusual line score when he went hitless but led the team with three RBI in the game. The first came on a ground ball that scored Fleetwood. He was credited with two more RBI on a ground ball that was booted and allowed two runs to score.

Those runs came during a six-run third inning when Lower Macungie sent 11 hitters to the plate and took a 9-0 lead in the game.

Connor Horwath needed just 48 pitches to get through four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three hitters.

As a heatwave hits the Lehigh Valley, LM has another stretch of three games in three days. It opens with the final regular season meeting against South Parkland, which will be played at Parkland High School. Lower Mac then hosts North Parkland and Whitehall-Coplay to finish the regular season.
