SHS baseball team needs help to reach league tourney

There is never a good time for a team to be in a slump. But going into the postseason is certainly a bad time.

The Salisbury baseball team dropped its final four games of the regular season, and it may have cost the Falcons a spot in the Colonial League playoffs.

Of the four games, three of them were against Saucon Valley and Southern Lehigh, two of the stronger teams in the Colonial League. Those three losses all came in a stretch of playing four games in five days.

For the regular season finale, the Falcons were playing the Panthers for the second time in a week and took a 14-7 loss. The loss dropped Salisbury to 10-10 overall this season and dropped its league record to 8-10.

The final loss against Saucon Valley Monday night saw Noah Hubert collect two hits and drive in five runs for the Panthers as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead.

Hunter Kotarski had two of Salisbury’s seven hits in the game and drove in three runs. Kotarski first struck in the bottom of the second inning when he delivered a two-run double to cut Saucon’s lead to 3-2.

As if to send a message, the Panthers answered with a four-run top of the third and added two more in the top of the fourth for a 9-2 advantage.

Kotarski had an RBI single to make it 9-3, but Salisbury didn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

The Falcons kept up the fight when Josiah Kuhns delivered a three-run triple to right and Dom Gracia drove him in to make it a 13-7 game after six innings.

Errors led to four unearned runs for Saucon Valley in the game. Team defense has continued to be an issue for the Falcons, who gave up 118 runs this season with 48 of them being unearned.

Other teams still have regular season games remaining and that’s where the Falcons can get some help to reach the league playoff tournament.

If Lehighton (9-8) beats Jim Thorpe (8-9) Tuesday, then Salisbury would make the playoffs as the number eight seed by virtue of having defeated the Olympians earlier in the season.

If Jim Thorpe wins that game, then the Falcons will sit out the league playoffs and prepare for districts later this month. They are currently seeded fifth in the District 11 3A classification.
