Lagowy, Nestor earn CL gold

Two Northwestern Lehigh athletes earned gold medals at last week’s Colonial League Championships.

Northwestern junior Michael Lagowy and sophomore Rosalia Nester both won events at the meet, held Tuesday-Wednesday, May 6-7 at Whitehall High School.

Lagowy cleared 6-3 to win the Colonial League high jump, capping off one of the most competitive events of the meet.

Competing in track for the first time this season, Lagowy entered the meet seeded fifth at 5-11 before delivering a breakthrough performance.

“My PR before this was 5-11, so to hit 6-3 is pretty crazy,” he said.

Lagowy’s path to the title wasn’t without challenges. He cleared 5-5, 5-7 and 5-9 on his first attempts before needing all three tries to get over 5-11. From there, he found his rhythm, clearing 6-1 on his first attempt and 6-3 on his second.

Jim Thorpe’s Pierce Gothard pushed him throughout, matching Lagowy through 6-1 and also clearing 6-3, but on his third attempt. Both were unable to clear 6-5.

“As I get more warmed up, I feel looser, and that helps a lot,” Lagowy said. “As the bar gets higher, I move back a little more, and that’s helped me.”

After playing lacrosse his first two years, Lagowy turned to track — and quickly found success.

“It’s been a grind, but it’s been awesome,” he said.

He credits his football background for helping him adapt.

“It’s similar mechanics and explosiveness, like going up to catch a ball,” said Lagowy, who earned all-state recognition on the gridiron this past fall. “I like the pressure. Having a lot of guys competing with me pushes you harder.”

Nestor turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances.

Nestor entered the 1600 seeded second behind Wilson’s Juliana Bonham (5:11.99), but flipped the script, winning the race in 5:18.09 with a strong finish.

“Honestly, I love running with Julia — she’s my favorite person to race,” Nestor said. “My goal for leagues was to focus more on racing strategy than pacing.”

With no clear front-runner to chase, Nestor had to adjust her approach.

“It was kind of me against myself,” she said. “Or just the breathing behind me.”

The win marked her first Colonial League title, and capped a season she described as “a lot of ups and downs.”

“It feels really good,” Nestor said. “It’s encouraging to have a good race and not feel fatigued afterward.”

She wasn’t done there.

Nestor also placed second in the 800 in 2:21.09 after entering seeded fourth (2:24.40), showcasing her range in a standout double.

Looking ahead, she has her sights set on state-qualifying standards.

“I think with people around me, I’ll have a good chance,” she said of both the 800 and 1600.

Several other Tiger athletes made trips to the podium at last week’s championship meet. Medals went to the top four finishers in each event.

Taylor Langley stepped on the medal stand after both hurdle events. She took second place in the 300-meter hurdles at 48.30 and was third in the 100-meter version in a time of 16.47.

Jossalin Romanot (pole vault, 8-9) tied for second place at the meet. Logan Mesics (triple jump, 42-7 3/4) and the boys 4x800 relay team (8:33.48) also earned silver medals last week.

Taking third place for Northwestern at leagues were Sophia Schaffer (200 26.36), Kylie Christman (javelin, 116-7), the girls 4x100 relay team (50.48) and the girls 4x800 relay (10:09.37).

Tiger fourth-place finishers at the league meet were Mallory Conner (discus, 101-6), the girls 4x400 relay (4:17.46), Hannah Gober (javelin, 112-5), Brady Furman (800, 2:03.41), Shane Leh (110 hurdles (16.12), Bradley Burnard (triple jump, 42-1 1/4) and Ian Zettlemoyer (discus, 141-7).

The Tigers were back in action at this week’s District 11 Championships. See next week’s Press for more about that meet.
