NWL T&F ends CL season with loss SL

The Southern Lehigh girls clinched their eighth-straight Colonial League title on Tuesday, sweeping Northwestern (105-45) and Palisades (122-28) to complete an 11-0 season.

The Tigers finished the season 10-1 after also claiming a 111 1/2-38 1/2 win over the Pirates.

“We gave it our best,” said Northwestern head coach Chuck Groller. “The girls have a lot of heart, grit, determination, and will give it their all in competing to the end.”

The Tigers are the last team to win a girls league title other than the Spartans, doing so in 2015 - which was the last of three-straight girls titles for NW. The 2020 season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Southern Lehigh showed its skill and depth, winning 12 events and sweeping the three relays. Alexandra Lea won the 100, 200 and 400 for the Spartans, while Neva Bogert was first in the 800 and 1600. Faith Schiffer captured the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Farrah Smtih placed first in the long jump and triple jump.

Northwestern continued its impressive performances in the throwing events.

Sadie Fenstermaker won the shot put and discus, an event the Tigers swept with Katie Brensinger second and Mallory Conner third. Conner was also second in the shot pot.

Sophomore Hannah Gober continued the success with a win in the javelin.

Fenstermaker, a senior, entered the week with the league’s best mark in the shot put and discus, while Gober was second in javelin. Her throw of 119-0 1/2 Tuesday was a season best.

Groller praised the team’s upperclassmen for helping the program sustain its success in recent years.

“The senior girls in their four years in track and field finished 38-6,” he said. “They are a great bunch of girls and I’m very proud of their accomplishments.”

Northwestern will close out its regular season with the Jim Thorpe Invitational this Thursday before getting ready for the postseason. “It’s now off to bigger and better things for the girls,” Groller said. “We have the JT Invite, leagues, districts, and hopefully states for some of them. I always love seeing their smiles, their enjoyment in competing, and laughter no matter if we win or lose.”

The Colonial League meet will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex.

Groller praised the team’s assistant coaches - Matt Fritz, Jordan Smith, Vanessa Blose, Brian Meckley, Rich Fogal, Mike Kistler, Paul Tomlin and Liz Fornauf - for the role they played in the program’s success this season and in years past.

The Tigers also competed in the Zephyr Invitational Saturday at Whitehall High School with several Northwestern Lehigh athletes finishing in the top five in their events.

Grace Yost set a school record by winning the girls pole vault at 10 feet, 7 inches.

Sadie Fenstermaker picked up two gold medals at Whitehall, winning the shot put (37-9) and discus (119-4). Gavin Nelson took first place in boys high jump at 6-7.

Katie Brensinger took second place in the 100-meter hurdles and was fourth in discus at Whitehall. Xander Giandomenico finished fourth in the 3,200.

Alexandra Diehl finished fourth in javelin. Mallory Conner took fifth place in the shot put at the invitational
