Coval eclipses 2,000 points, and counting

Senior Nick Coval has been a main contributor for the Parkland boys basketball team since joining the program as a freshman. As an elite scorer, points have been aplenty for Coval and have added up over his four-year career.

In last Wednesday night’s District 11 6A semifinal win over Stroudsburg, Coval netted career point 2,000, an accomplishment not many high school players get to achieve.

“It means a lot because I put so much work into basketball, so seeing the work paying off is a very rewarding feeling,” said Coval. “To do it in front of my family and a lot of Parkland people also made it a very special moment for me.”

When Coval scored his 1,000th career point, back on Jan. 19, 2021, stands were empty due to COVID-19. This time he got to celebrate with those closest to him.

Coval is just the sixth player from a Lehigh Valley school to hit the mark and just the first one since Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman in 2014.

So how does he work on his game to be an elite scorer?

“I work on being a three-level scorer, which has helped me score so many points,” Coval said. “I can score around the rim, score in the midrange and score from three-point range, so I really work on those three parts of my game and it has helped me reach 2,000 points.”

Coval recorded the all-important basket early in the second quarter on a layup after he drove the lane to the basket. Since it happened early on with the game still undecided and close, he didn’t really have much time to reflect until after the final buzzer.

“I felt joy after the game ended,” said Coval. “During the game I didn’t think much of it because it was a close game, but after the game it was pure joy. I was thinking of all the people who helped me along the way, which made me extremely thankful for the journey I’ve had so far.”

It was a special night all around for the senior committed to continue his basketball career at Davidson College next year. He reached the major milestone and his team won the game then went on to win the district title.

“Yes, it was very special,” Coval said. “The most important goal on my mind was the district championship, so to get 2,000 and the win made the night even better. Also, to do it in front of everyone the has supported from the start of my freshman year made it awesome.”
