LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Trojan girls suffer first loss

The Parkland High School girls basketball team had its busiest week of the new calendar year last week. Because of inclement weather postponing some games and cramming them into another week, the Trojans played three games in four days from last Wednesday through Saturday. They won two games against Eastern Pennsylvania Conference teams, both at home, but lost their first conference game of the season over the weekend.

Parkland defeated Liberty 61-34 last Wednesday, Jan. 24, and then beat Whitehall two nights later, 66-19. The Trojans, however, fell in overtime to Easton, 63-58, on Saturday.

In the win over the Hurricanes, in a game that did not count toward the conference standings, the Trojans blitzed them from the opening tip-off, scoring 23 of the first 32 points in the first quarter. They held a 37-15 lead at halftime and had the advantage soar to 30 points (50-20) heading into the final frame.

Madi Siggins recorded a game-high 16 points and Talia Zurinskas was just behind with 15 points. Delaney Chilcote was a third player scoring in double figures with 10 points. Aneri McGalla finished just shy of double digits with nine points.

It was more of the same in the victory against the Zephyrs as offense and defense helped Parkland take control early and win decisively. The Trojans went up 17-9 in the first quarter and then put the game out of reach in the second quarter, scoring 26 points on offense and not allowing a single point on defense to go into the locker room ahead 43-9.

McGalla led the team with 18 points, while Siggins and Zurinskas were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Addi Fritzinger totaled nine points.

The Red Rovers led 14-13 after one, but the Trojans took the lead in the second, going to halftime on top 28-25. Easton took back the lead in the third and led 43-39 after three. In a back-and-forth game, Parkland outscored Easton 15-11 in the fourth to force overtime, but the Red Rover scored nine of the 13 points in the extra period to win.

McGalla scored a team-best 18 points and both Siggins and Chilcote tallied 14 points. Zurinskas added 10.

Parkland is 17-2 overall and 12-1 in the conference and concludes its regular season portion of its schedule this week with three games. The Trojans were at Northampton this past Tuesday, host rival Emmaus on Friday and then are at Central Catholic in the season finale on Monday. Postseason basketball will begin later that week.
