LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

PHS boys stay perfect

The Parkland High School boys basketball team had its busiest week of the new calendar year last week. Because of inclement weather postponing some games earlier this month, the Trojans played three games in four days from last Wednesday through Saturday.

They won all three games against Eastern Pennsylvania Conference teams, all on the road, to remain undefeated in 2024.

In the first game last Wednesday night, Parkland was taken to overtime, but was able to pull out a 50-45 victory over Liberty at Memorial Gymnasium in a game that was scheduled as a nonconference game and does not count toward the EPC standings.

After a day off, the Trojans then had their first of two double-digit wins, the first one on Friday night at Whitehall, 65-55. The following day, Parkland took down Easton 62-45 to stay unbeaten against EPC teams (13-0) this season and improve to 15-3 overall.

The Hurricanes tied the score on a three-pointer with :05 left to send the game into extra time. The Trojans outscored them 10-5 in that frame, highlighted by field goals from Luke Spang and Zaire Smaltz. Parkland had success in the first and third quarters, holding a 13-7 and 12-7 advantage, respectively, but Liberty controlled the second and fourth quarters, with 11-6 and 15-9 frames, respectively.

Nick Coval finished with a team-best 15 points, while Smaltz was just behind with 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jayden Thomas also finished in double figures with 10 points. Spang and Robbie Ruisch both tallied six points.

Parkland used a strong second quarter to take control of the game and defeat the Red Rovers over the weekend. Trailing 14-10 after the opening quarter, the Trojans went on a 22-5 run in the second stanza to go on top 32-19 at halftime. Coval and Smaltz once again paced their team’s offense, combining for 39 points, as Coval had a game-high 22 points and Smaltz added 17. Thomas recorded seven points and Chase Taylor contributed five points.

Parkland had its final home regular season game this past Tuesday night on senior night against Northampton. The Trojans are at Emmaus on Friday night and then host the Hoop Group event where they take on Executive Education Academy.
