Defensive mindset is key for Trojans

The Parkland High School girls basketball team qualified for both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 6A tournaments last season after finishing the regular season with a 15-9 overall record and 13-3 mark in the conference.

The Trojans, however, did not end up winning a game in either postseason tournament, losing as a higher seed in each. They were the four seed in EPCs and fell to the fifth seed, Bethlehem Catholic, and then in Districts, they were the third seed and were defeated by the sixth seed, Northampton.

Parkland and head coach Ed Ohlson lost a quintet of talented players to graduation after last season, including Alexis Brader, Hailey Sammarco, Katherine Hucaluk, Olivia Werkheiser and Julia Scriff.

The Trojans, however, welcome back some top returning players, including seniors Madi Siggins, Lauren Ervin, Sophie Frank and Talia Zurinskas, junior Delaney Chilcote and sophomores Addy Fritzinger and Aneri McGalla.

The program will also welcome some key newcomers in senior Olivia Wynn, juniors Sarah Car and Katalyna Canela and sophomore Isabella Hallal.

“We have a talented roster this season and they work hard to get better every day,” Ohlson said. “I’m very excited about coaching this group and seeing what we can accomplish this season.”

The goal, like every year, is to get back to the conference and district tournaments and qualify for states. The Trojans want to win some games and make a run this time around and that will start on the defensive end of the floor, according to Ohlson.

“We will look to compete for EPC and district honors,” said Ohlson. “There is a good mixture of upperclassmen and young players to make this a very dynamic group. This team should be able to score, but defense will be key. If this team can find it’s defensive mindset it will have a chance to be a very good team.”

Parkland’s 2023-24 regular season begins next Wednesday night at home with the conference opener against Allen.
