A tragedy has struck the Whitehall-Coplay School District community.

Cara Craft, a Whitehall High School music teacher, and her family were involved in an accident July 27 in Maryland, according to a GoFundMe account. Craft’s husband, Ray, was killed in the crash. Craft sustained life-threatening injuries.

“She is currently hospitalized, has already undergone multiple surgeries to stabilize her and faces a very difficult recovery. Cara requires ongoing surgeries, intense physical therapy and medical care to survive and rebuild her life,” Joseph Kane, organizer of the GoFundMe and Craft’s uncle, said in the description.

Thankfully, their young son Anthony had only minor injuries from the accident.

“While [Anthony] is physically safe and surrounded by family love and care, he now faces a future without his father and needs his mother to heal. With Ray gone and Cara unable to work due to her severe injuries, the family faces astronomical financial burdens. These include the costs of surgeries and medical bills, long-term rehabilitation for Cara, burial costs and related expenses for Ray, care for Anthony and basic living expenses,” Kane said.

The GoFundMe, found at gofundme.com/f/support-cara-craft-family-after-tragic-accident, has an ever-changing goal due to the outpouring of love from family, friends, coworkers and community members. As of press time, $88,702 was raised toward a $100,000 goal. The link has been shared on multiple social media pages and groups, asking for donations, if able to, and thoughts and prayers.

“Cara is still in the ICU at the (J.W.) Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, (W.Va.). She is getting a little better each day,” Kane told The Press Aug. 2.

In addition to being the WHS music teacher, Craft also is the director for both theater and choir and the adviser for Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honors Society.
