Lehigh Valley Zoo’s newest resident, Fritz, is making history as the first African penguin chick hatched at the zoo in more than nine years. Born May 8, Fritz shares the same hatch date as his mother, Bahati, who was the last penguin chick born at the zoo in 2017. The male chick, named by the Jaindl family, sponsors of the Jaindl Penguin Pavilion, is the first successful offspring for Bahati and the son of Thulani. Although Fritz faced a life-threatening bout of pneumonia at six weeks old and spent two weeks in the zoo’s veterinary intensive care unit, he has recovered and is continuing to grow behind the scenes under the care of zoo staff. Once fully acclimated, Fritz will join the zoo’s African penguin colony of 15 birds in the outdoor habitat, where visitors will be able to see him in the coming weeks.
