Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, offers many opportunities for people to connect and enjoy time together.

Sip N’ Share will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 at Eight Oaks, 7189 Route 309, New Tripoli.

Girls Night Out will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at La Dolce Casa, 16 W. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Union Lutheran has an elementary youth group and a men’s organization called the Journeymen, which have regular activities.

Pastor Gordon Camp offered reflections on the season.

“As summer begins to give way to fall, our calendars start filling again. School returns, activities resume, and familiar routines take shape. It’s a season of new beginnings — and an opportunity to reconnect.

“In a world where so much of life happens through screens and hurried schedules, genuine community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we intentionally make room for each other,” Pastor Camp continued.

“I often think about the old front porch. It wasn’t fancy or complicated. It was simply a place where people slowed down, waved to neighbors, shared stories, and offered a listening ear.

“The front porch reminded us that relationships matter,” observed Camp.

He noted the church can be that kind of place.

When I was growing up in Schnecksville in the 1950s and 1960s, I rode my bike up and down the sidewalks of Main Street (now Route 309) on a summer evening, and nearly every house had someone sitting on a rocking chair on the front porch.

I knew everyone on both sides of the street, and I waved as I went past and sometimes stopped to talk.

Since people do not sit out on porches anymore, Pastor Camp hopes Union Lutheran has a front porch spirit — a place that is welcoming, accessible and open to everyone.

Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, will have its last outdoor worship in the grove for this year at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 23.

Organizer Phil Wehr reports there will be no Blues in the Night this year.

All are welcome to attend the Medical Debt fundraiser in the grove from 3-7 p.m. on Aug. 16.

There will be food and live music.

The event is free, but donations may be given for the Medical Debt Relief program.
