LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Bowling may be right up your alley

Jordan Lanes in Whitehall is alive with the sound of crashing pins and balls rolling into gutters.

As witnessed by the number of cars in the parking lot and people inside lacing up their shoes, bowling remains one of the most popular activities to do in the area. It is designed for all ages and can be played during all seasons. It’s also a great way to meet friends and get some exercise.

Manager Terry Thompson has worked at Jordan Lanes in several capacities since 1992. He pointed out Jordan Lanes, 731 Jordan Parkway, is the only bowling center that has wooden lanes. It is also the largest bowling alley in the area, with 40 lanes, he said.

Jordan Lanes was built in 1955. At the time, it started with 24 lanes. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1962 and has slowly grown to what it is today. The bowling alley also features billiard tables and a full-service bar.

Bowling is a great sport to learn hand/eye coordination, build muscle memory and gain knowledge of timing.

Youths can earn scholarship money if they participate in tournaments. The important thing is for them to participate. They do not have to excel to earn the scholarship money.

For adults, it’s a good exercise that is not too strenuous. It’s a good chance to meet people should you decide to join a league. Seeing those pins get slammed and knocked over can also be a stress relief!

Since the end of the COVID-19 lockdown, the bowling alley has seen record numbers of people coming out. There are leagues offered every night of the week. Though they are currently halfway through the season, one can join anytime.

In fact, you can join a league starting at 3 years old. It is called the Pee Wee league, and Jordan places bumpers on the sides of the alley to help with success. From there, the progression for kids is to the Bantams, Prep, Juniors and then Seniors. When they reach the age of 18, they would join an adult league.

Though being a part of a league is more about participation and camaraderie, Jordan Lanes has certified coaches to help you improve your game. There is also an Internet application called Specto that can be downloaded and used anytime to help with their bowling game.

Jordan Lanes offers several special events. In March, it hosts a Center for Animal Health and Welfare bowlathon. In April, a bowlathon to benefit the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program is held. August brings the Pro Bowlers’ Association’s three-day tournament. The public can come, watch and learn. They can also spend time talking to members of the PBA to get bowling tips and advice.

Jordan Lanes is always looking for folks to join the leagues it offers.

Come out and enjoy yourself! On those winter days when you are tempted to sit around and not move, come get some exercise. You may find your sport - and even your passion.

As Thompson pointed out, “No experience is necessary.”
