EHS falls in girls soccer title game

The Emmaus girls soccer team could be playing its best when it matters most.

The Hornets suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to top seed Parkland in Saturday’s East Penn Conference title game, but taking the undefeated Trojans to overtime is the closest any team has come to knocking them off all season.

Just three teams, and only two from District 11, have come within a goal of Parkland this season.

In the title game, Emmaus was just minutes from the game going to penalty kicks before Parkland notched the game-winner.

Emmaus defended 12 Trojan corner kicks in the game and allowed just three shots on goal in the entire contest.

Aristea Gougoustamos scored the game-winning goal with an assist from Sejal Wellington.

The title game marked the Hornets’ second 1-0 loss to Parkland as that was the result of both teams’ regular season finale on Oct. 12.

Emmaus (16-4-1) was the No. 3 seed in the league playoffs and opened with a 4-0 win over Bethlehem Catholic then took down No. 2 seed Central Catholic 2-0 in the semifinals. The Vikings had played the Hornets to a 0-0 draw during their regular season meeting on Sept. 16.

With the league playoffs behind them, the Hornets now enter the District 11 playoffs as the No. 3 seed. In Class 4A, only the district champion advances to the state playoffs, meaning the next loss will end the season for any team in the tournament.

Emmaus will host No. 6 Pleasant Valley (9-8-1) Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a district quarterfinal game. A win would advance Emmaus to the semifinals where No. 2 Easton (16-4) awaits after earning a bye in the first round.

Emmaus beat Pleasant Valley in their only meeting this year, 6-1 on Sept. 9, but lost to Easton 2-0 on Sept. 28.
