Tiger boys soccer finishes 18-0 in CL

The Northwestern Lehigh boys soccer team finished off its regular season with a pair of 12-0 wins to cap an undefeated season. The Tigers finished the season with an overall mark of 18-0 and a Colonial League record of 12-0 as the Tigers head into the league playoffs and then into districts.

In the 12-0 wins over Catasauqua and Pottsville, Matt Johnson continued his assault on opposing goalies with five goals and three assists for Northwestern. Johnson, along with Josh Zellner and Cayden Fitch, form a three-headed offensive monster for the Tigers and Zellner contributed with four goals and seven assists, while Fitch scored three times in the two games.

The three players have been especially hot down the stretch with all three players scoring at least one goal in each of the last seven games. Johnson has scored in eight straight and Zellner has found the net in 12 straight games and 16 of the Tigers 18 games this season.

Coach Nate Hunsicker expected his team to be able to put goals on the board and was especially interested in how many goals Johnson would score this season after he led the team with 23 goals last season in his sophomore year. Johnson again led the Tigers in goals during the regular season with 30, while Zellner was right behind with 29 goals. Zellner led the team in assists with 18, while Johnson was an accomplice on 15 goals during the regular season.

“I am really interested to see how many goals Matt will score this season,” said Hunsicker before the season got underway. “He had a big season last year and teams will be marking him more this year, but with his speed and talent, I think he is still going to be able to put up big numbers.”

In their 18 games this season, Northwestern Lehigh outscored its opponents by a total of 106-9 with 11 shutout wins.

As much as the Tigers are known for scoring, their defense developed an identity of its own. The defense had some new faces in place this season and they quickly came together with the senior players to form a cohesive unit.

Senior goalie Damian Krapf played in all 18 of the games this season, while younger brother Brandon Krapf took over in six games. With Brandon in goal, Damian got some playing time at other positions and contributed a goal and an assist this season for Northwestern Lehigh.

As the top seed in the Colonial League playoffs, Northwestern will have a first-round bye as the postseason gets underway. The Tigers first game will come on Monday against the winner of the game between Pen Argyl and Moravian Academy. Northwestern downed Pen Argyl 3-0 during the regular season and beat the Lions 3-2.
