Hawks look to rebound at Easton

Two situations easily can change the complexion of a football game and take a victory away.

Against Northampton, Bethlehem Catholic discovered it last week.

The Golden Hawks saw a kickoff return for a score, a muffed punt, and the inability to score from the Northampton one-yard line swing a victory away from them and into Northampton’s hands in a 31-21 loss.

Becahi (3-3) suffered its second straight defeat, and they will try and rebound when they travel to Easton Friday night.

“We had our chances,” said Hawks’ head coach Kyle Haas. “We had crucial errors at crucial times. Three plays really hurt us. It was almost like we were snakebite.

“We just didn’t execute. If we did it might have been 27-17 in our favor. But we can’t change fate.”

Regardless of the outcome, Haas believes his team will toe the line.

“I think we’ll continue to get better,” he stressed. “I don’t think anybody is ready to push the panic button. It has been certain situations that have hurt us.

“Defensively, we played well. Guys here and there missed assignments. On their TD pass, we blew a gasket in the secondary.”

Haas and his troops will keep the faith.

“Nobody’s quitting.” he added. “We have come a long way for something like that to happen. These kids want to correct their mistakes. We have a good chemistry here.

“Good things will happen to us down the road. We have to move on to Easton.”

The Golden Hawks will travel to legendary Cottingham Stadium Friday night to meet Easton (2-4), which has won two straight. The Red Rovers blasted Pocono Mountain East, 54-0, last week.

“They’re on a two-game winning streak, and they have played much better,” evaluated Haas. “They will be physical and have a good defense.

“We have to take care of the football and be good on special teams. We have to correct our mistakes and make less mistakes. It certainly will be a competitive football game.

“It (Cottingham) is a fun place to play and a great atmosphere for high school football.”

NOTES AND PREDICTION: Easton running back Aiden Hutchinson ran for 170 yards on just nine carries and scored four touchdowns in last week’s win. Easton will come into the game outsourcing their last two opponents PM East and Allen, 116-21. However, both Allen and PM East have one combined win between them ... Quarterback Joseph Martinez had a quiet game against PM East, but he was nine of 12 for 121 yards against Allen ... Beca running back Jacob Terry had 51 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns, and fellow back Rahmel Terry had 46 yards with score. Quarterback Luke Thomas struggled with nine of 20 completions for 122 yards with two interceptions ... Beca has reached the crossroads here. They will face an Easton squad that had trouble handling Allentown Central Catholic’s running game earlier this year. That will be the key for the Hawks -running the ball. They do have to clean up their mental lapses. Haas believes his team can play meaningful football in November and December. This would be a jump-start with Parkland, Central Catholic and Freedom down the road. Speaking of crossroads, coach Haas will owe me a Crossroads pizza from Hellertown. They have frozen ones, so you can ship it ... GOLDEN HAWKS, 28-21.
