Wawa drive-thru and convenience store approved in Lower Macungie

At the July 21 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting, Resolution 2022-41 was approved. This is the plan to allow for a Wawa drive-thru restaurant. The location of this facility will be the Trexlertown Business Center, Unit 5, on the south side of Hamilton Boulevard, 6216 Hamilton Blvd.

The hours of operation will be 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Delivery trucks can be no larger than 40 WB during normal business hours. This will not be a fuel business or a minimart.

Adequate garbage receptacles will be available to eliminate potential litter. There is a plan to protect the sycamore trees. The plan was approved with a change to be adjusted for the signage.

The parks and recreation board lost two of its members. James Windt and Amy Shannon have resigned. Board President Brian Higgins said Windt will be remembered as “The Godfather of Pickle Ball” as he is responsible for getting the township to set up courts. The resignations were accepted by the board.

Resolution 2022-39 was approved. This is for the agreement with Norfolk-Southern for the stormwater pipe under the Sauerkraut Lane Railroad.

The Maulfair Drive project will begin shortly.

The Brandywine Village Swale project received four bids. The lowest was from Land Tech Enterprises in the amount of $297,998. This project is at the intersection of Sauerkraut Lane and Mill Creek Road.

The township has received approval from East Penn School District to establish and administer a crossing guard program. This Resolution 2022-47 was approved.

A question arose by a resident as to why this has been such a lengthy process. Higgins explained this situation began over two years ago when the township did not want to be part of the administration of the program. The township would continue with the funding but did not want to be involved with scheduling, hiring, etc. There has been no response from the East Penn School District after multiple requests for proposals. There still has been no response about the funding. This problem has been on the agenda for three years.
