Northampton council approves request for annual NASD car show

Northampton Borough Council members met quickly July 7, so they could attend the Community Days event, held July 6-9.

A request was approved for Northampton Area School District Student Council to hold its seventh annual car show July 30. The show runs 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Bicentennial Park West in East Allen Township.

The group wants to use the Northampton portable restroom and agreed to pay the cost of the individual to monitor the generator needed to operate the room.

Also at the meeting, council voted to provide a 3% cost-of-living increase to the eligible retired police officers via resolution 2022-8.

Paw Prints on the Canal organizers received council permission to hold the annual event June 11, 2023.

A report from the well-attended 2022 Paw Prints event held last month will be provided to council at the July 21 council meeting.

The Northampton Exchange Club requested and received council permission to sponsor the annual Jack Frost Parade Oct. 20, starting 7 p.m.

It was reported the municipal swimming pool continues to operate smoothly. The pool fun has increased with the addition of a pavilion, but pool receipts are slightly down from last year.

It was noted the borough constructed many plant gardens, flower pots and locations to house flowers and plants to beautify the community for the past 25 years. Because of the many constructed landscaped areas and parks, the borough is experiencing difficulty maintaining the large number of plants, flowers and shrubs. No decisions were made to address the matter.

The borough’s code enforcement officer is assessing a correlation that occurs every summer in Northampton. As the temperature grows, so does weed growth around pavements and street curbs. He plans to begin notifying residents whose weeds are “out of control.”

A pickleball court is being installed in Canal Park and was reportedly nearing completion. The court surface will be the borough’s famous colors - black and orange. A resident stopped by the borough office and suggested the organization of a pickleball league.

Pickleball is a racket/paddle sport created by combining elements of several other racket sports. Two to four players can participate, and the game is similar to playing badminton with a net similar to a tennis court.

Council members were excited to get to the Community Days event.

Community Days is sponsored by the Northampton Exchange Club. Each night has a theme, with July 6 as kids night, July 7 as veterans night, July 8 as Northampton night and July 9 as firemen day.

The Northampton Exchange Club was organized in 1927. It was then chartered by the National Exchange Club. The national club’s motto is “America’s Service Club.”

The next borough council meeting is 7:30 p.m. July 21 in the council chamber at the municipal building, 1401 Laubach Ave. It is an in-person meeting only.
