PHS girls lax seeks postseason success

Brittaney Costigan is in her first season as head coach of the Parkland High School girls lacrosse team. Although it is her first year in charge, she has been around the program for most of the last decade. She knows the winning tradition of the program and what it takes to get the job done.

The Trojans finished the regular season 9-8 overall and 6-3 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, qualifying for both the EPC and district tournaments.

“I thought we had a good year overall in my first year,” said Costigan. “We started playing our best towards the end of the year and that is when you want to be playing well. We were able to achieve our goals of finishing with a winning record and making both postseason tournaments. It was a great year, but we have more to play for and the girls are hungry for more.”

The month of May has not gone according to plan for Parkland, just yet. The Trojans fell in their final two conference games, albeit to two of the other four EPC playoff teams in Easton and Emmaus. Parkland and Emmaus then met six days later in the semifinal round of the conference tournament with the same result, the Green Hornets coming out on top.

“They’re a great team,” Costigan said. “We’ve just had a tough time against them this year and they do a lot of things well. The girls never gave up though and I’m proud of their effort. We just didn’t have the firepower to overcome them.”

Parkland will have a chance to bounce back and stop its current three-game losing streak when the district tournament begins next week.

The Trojans will be looking to win their first district championship since 2019. Costigan knows they have the team to compete for gold and she will be helping prepare them at practice this week to work on some things to get better for when they next hit the field next week.

“We will be ready to go when districts start,” said Costigan. “We will have some time off from competition here the next few days, but we will still be practicing and competing to be able to bring back a district title to Parkland.”

The seedings and matchups for the District 11 3A Tournament should come out this weekend or early next week.
