Falcons are one of CL’s top teams

The Salisbury High School girls tennis team has had a successful season so far under first-year head coach Stan Fidrych. The Falcons are 9-2 overall and 7-2 in the Colonial League and have won four straight matches.

With just two matches left in the regular season this week, Fidrych is pleased with how the season has gone.

“So far we are one of the top three teams in the Colonial League,” said Fidrych. “With one Colonial League contest remaining against favored Southern Lehigh, our team is ready for a challenging match. Our other is Jim Thorpe, who has some outstanding players too.”

As a newer coach, Fidrych has not been around the team that long and doesn’t have a strong sense of each player’s overall game so far. But he is excited for his team being able to play this season and highlighted some of his more successful players at the top of the lineup.

“The season for me and our players has been a question mark, not knowing if we would have enough players and because of potential covid issues,” Fidrych said. “These turned out to be minor. It has been our four seniors, Maisie Oliver, Marcie Silberman, Mackenzie Hankee and Krista Bonge, who have carried the load for No. 1 Doubles, No. 1 Singles and No. 2 Singles. All have been outstanding and met the test for each match before them.”

Fidrych first joined the program three years ago as an assistant coach. He’s been able to see the team grow and improve over his three seasons.

“In 2018 when I first joined the team as an assistant, all were freshmen then,” said Fidrych. “I witnessed the development of their skills sets as each year progressed. Now, these seniors are backed up by underclassmen like Angela Bitar, Mia Kezengwa, Genesis Almodovar, Addison Paulik and Haylee Leayman, who have stepped in to help this year’s team win.”

With matches this week against Jim Thorpe and Southern Lehigh, Salisbury is looking forward to districts coming up in the next week or so.

“I expect a strong finish in districts,” Fidrych said. “Notably at No. 2 Singles with Mackenzie Hankee (9-2) and No. 1 Doubles with Marcie Silberman and Maisie Oliver (10-1), whose records are reflective of their winning ways.”
