Soup’s on: Holy Trinity continues weekly meal distribution

Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua, is working to fulfill its mission to serve the community with a takeout hot soup and bread-sharing distribution called Soup on Wednesdays.

Delicious cream of potato and cheese tortellini soups were on the menu recently, along with bread, fellowship and goodwill.

Active church volunteers labor to cook and serve the soup and distribute bread to residents 4-5:30 p.m. Their plans are to hold the takeout hot soup event weekly through February. There is no charge for the soup.

Janis Charvala, a church member who helps at nearly all events, said as few as 42 and as many as 67 people have come to the church for soup nights.

“One of the nights we ran out of soup, so pastor went out to get mac and cheese to serve,” Charvala said.

Brian Riedy, pastor of Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, said the takeout hot soup events may continue past February, based on the economy.

Riedy noted Holy Trinity will hold fundraisers to benefit other organizations whenever possible. Recently, church members and volunteers held fundraising activities for Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown and PA Wounded Warriors.

Riedy said an effort is being considered by Catasauqua Mayor Barbara Schlegel to coordinate food-providing organizations in the borough to better reach those residents experiencing food insecurity.

Holy Trinity also holds a free monthly community lunch 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the last Saturday of every month.

The next Soup on Wednesdays is scheduled for Feb. 3.
