Girls hope for berth in D-11 finals
The District 11 3A field hockey tournament has been cut to four teams and Northampton is one of them.
The Konkrete Kids, seeded fourth, took on No. 1 seed Stroudsburg Wednesday night at Whitehall, which comes after Press deadlines for the week, with the winner advancing to the championship round Saturday against either Emmaus or Easton, who played last night's opening game of the semifinal doubleheader.
Coach Kelly Backenstoe's Kids got to the semis by beating Parkland for the third time this season, this time 1-0. Meanwhile, Stroudsburg also shut out Nazareth by the same 1-0 score.
Emmaus, the No. 2 seed, whitewashed Pocono Mountain East 10-0 and No. 3 seed Easton edged Whitehall 3-2 in the other quarterfinal.
For Northampton (13-7), it was Hallie Muffley's goal with 4:03 remaining in the first half that did in Parkland. It was Muffley's third winning goal against Parkland as the K-Kids beat the Trojans 1-0 and 2-1 during the regular season.
Makenna Marhefka had the assist on Northampton's only corner shot of the game as Muffley slapped in the goal.
"Our defense was the key," said Backenstoe. "Our corner defensive crew (Megan Wiest, Amber Saylor, Emily Schwartz, Kiersten Schmall, Kasey Frey and Marhefka) and goalie Shannon Dalton were tremendous."
Backenstoe said her team is "focused on the playoffs and our execution shows it. We hadn't played for two weeks and we are where we should be" in the playoffs.
"Hallie came through Saturday and Makenna did a great job on defense and offense. Dalton was outstanding," said Backenstoe as she reminded us that Dalton and Ashley Kunsman combined for 10 shutouts this season.
The Kids' offense is directed by Wiest, who has 28 goals and seven assists this season to boost her career goal total to 44.
Stroudsburg (21-0-2), the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference champion, is led by a pair of EPC first team all-stars in Kalista Gioglio and Samantha Tenner and second teamer Jen Bukowski. The Mountaineers' only ties were with Crestwood and Wilkes-Barre Coughlin.
Emmaus, seeded second with a 19-1-1 record, is seeking its 26th straight District 11 and its' opponent Easton is 16-3-1 and the EPC's Steel Division winner.
