Boys split two games, girls drop two

The boys soccer team split two recent games, falling to the Mounties and beating Eastburg North.

The Mounties proved to be too strong on Monday night, scoring three times for the victory.

John Burns scored in the first half off of a header from a corner kick placed to him by Oliver Maloney at the 19 minute mark. Northampton's best chance to tie it came with 10:13 to play in the first half when Cameron Peploe intercepted a pass from the Stroudsburg defense with clear space to the goal but fired it right at the keeper.

Anthony Lewis managed to manuever his way through two Kid defenders for the first goal of the second half. Matt McDermott assisted the goal. McDermott fed Lewis from the right wing and Lewis did the rest. Cesar Hernandez finished the scoring when he shot the ball past keeper Austin Cooper in front of the net. Cooper would finish the game with 10 saves, putting in an otherwise solid performance against a solid team from up north.

Northampton spent the rest of last week in practice mode, as the Frein manhunt search in the Poconos kept the PM East game on the shelf. By Friday afternoon Coach Carvin made it clear his team needed to be ready to play Saturday morning.

The team seemed a bit sluggish after the first half and who could blame them. An 80 minute bus ride on a Saturday morning will take a lot of just about anyone.

The second half was a different story, though. The Kids went back to basics and kept things simple. They played simple soccer using basic passing and solid movement on and off the ball to score three, second half goals for the win. They wasted no time.

At 2:12 into the second half, Cameron Peploe buried a shot low far post into the goal from A.J. Schroettner. Four minutes later Schroettner scored off of a header thanks to a perfectly placed corner cross from Jared Fantasia. Peploe scored again later in the second half when Chad O'Donnell fed Peploe a redirected ball inside the box, this time Cameron using the near post leaving the goalie a sitting duck and a 3-0 final.

It was a big win heading into another tough week of conference play. Northampton will play at Central Catholic at Iron Lakes on Tuesday. They will then host Nazareth Thursday and Southern Lehigh Friday with both matches being held at Wolf Field.

Girls

The Northampton girls soccer team was a 3-1 winner over East Stroudsburg North on Sept. 20.

The Kids got two first half goals and that was all they needed in the win.

Breaunna Colonna-Dotter got the girls on the board in the first half on a pass from Gabby Asencio to make it 1-0. Then it was Asencio who scored in the same half to extend the lead to 2-0.

Eastburg North cut the lead in half with a second half tally by Yudemis Sanchez that was unassisted but made the score 2-1.

Emily Bartholomew gave the Kids some insurance with a second half score to make it 3-1. Colonna-Dotter assisted on the play.

Anna Keffer made nine saves in net for Northampton in the win as the girls improved to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the EPC.

A Sept. 17 game with Pocono Mountain East was postponed.
