LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Hawks hope to have learned from close call with Bears

If Bethlehem Catholic didn't get a wake-up call after last week's 40-38 victory over Pleasant Valley, then the Hawks may find themselves in similar situations the rest of the season.

As most people expected the Hawks to have little trouble with the Bears from up north Saturday night, that clearly wasn't the case, as PV built a 35-21 shocking halftime lead before watching Becahi storm back in the second half to secure the win.

For head coach Joe Henrich, he knows his team needs to be more prepared going into games.

"We have a very talented team that does not practice or prepare the best way day in and day out," Henrich said. "We coach 15, 16 and 17-year-old kids, who may think differently from us, as coaches, as to what's important during the week and in preparation before a game.

In the end, these kids will have to make a decision on what they want to do."

And what they surely don't want to do is find themselves behind the eight ball against a team that isn't as talented, which was the case with Pleasant Valley.

Henrich doesn't know if his team underestimated Pleasant Valley, but he does know that Becahi's defense must improve. Bears' quarterback Brandon Kuehner was 11-for-22 for 322 yards and three touchdowns. He was 9-of-13 in the first half for 265 yards and three scores. Becahi (2-0) made adjustments in the second half to hamper the Bears attack, but Henrich knows his defense must be better, as they've given up 65 points in their first two games.

"I've been very disappointed in our defensive performance so far," said Henrich. "I believed this group would be better. We have too many missed assignments, poor execution and freelancing going on out there that has to get fixed. Our defense is certainly a concern for us right now."

With a trip up north to Pocono Mountain West (0-2) this week, the Hawks will be heavy favorites against the Panthers, who lost to Stroudsburg last week 30-0.

But being favorites may not be the term Henrich wants for his team this week.

"You never know if kids come into a game and underestimate an opponent," he said. "Those teams up north feel they have something to prove to teams in the Lehigh Valley and we need to come out with the same type of intensity as them."
