Kids end soccer careers
Northampton's Sam Gaye ended the fall soccer season with a Lehigh Valley Conference First-Team selection because of his contributions on the field.
Over the weekend, Gaye backed up that selection with his performance in the 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic at Whitehall High School's Zephyrs Sports Complex. He was one of four Northampton seniors selected as Lions All-Stars in Sunday's double-header game.
Julian Santos joined Gaye on the boys' team, while Leandra Sterner and Erica Filipovits were named all-stars for the girls' squad.
"It was a good game, and it was an honor playing with players from Parkland and all of those good teams," Gaye said. "It was a good experience."
The Colonial League boys jumped on the Lehigh Valley Conference and Mountain Valley Conference squad with two goals in the first 14 minutes. But after a goal from Parkland's Belal Mohamed, Gaye, who was named the Offensive MVP for the LVC/MVC team with two goals, tallied his first score with two minutes to play in the half that knotted it at two goals apiece.
But as quickly as the LVC/MVC team tied it up, the Colonial League retook the lead moments into the second half. Saucon Valley's Will Demmel and Northwestern's Brandon Ettl scored back-to-back goals to give the Colonial League a 4-2 advantage. Gaye then fired in his second goal with 26 minutes to play, but Moravian's Ryan Brown and Bangor's Matthew Palmer added two more scores for the Colonial League to secure the 6-3 victory.
"The first goal I think was the best part," Gaye said. "I had the first two that I missed, and I really wanted to make up for that. Being a good team player, I didn't want to take any blame or anything."
Parkland's Kyle Stengel earned Defensive MVP honors for the LVC/MVC. On the Colonial League side, Mowrey (Offensive MVP) and Southern Lehigh's Matthew Dicker (Defensive MVP) were recognized for their contributions.
Instead of looking at his LVC and MVC as opponents, whom he did for the entire regular season, Gaye was able to take the field with them this time around. That alone put a smile on the athletes' faces.
"Even though we lost the game, I really had fun," Gaye said. "Coming into this game, I knew it was going to be a tough game. Playing against those guys in the regular season, some games were really tough."
The LVC/MVC girls began the day with a 3-1 victory over the Colonial League.
Following a goal by Saucon Valley's Alicia Binn that drew a 1-1 tie, LVC/MVC Offensive MVP Amanda McCarthy of Emmaus responded to put her team back in front. She scored two consecutive goals, including one with 4:55 to play, to give the LVC/MVC a 3-1 win over the Colonial League.
East Stroudsburg South's Kelsey Finn was named the Defensive MVP for LVC/MVC, while Notre Dame East Stroudsburg's Kelsey Finn (Offensive MVP) and Saucon Valley's Victoria Young (Defensive MVP) were awarded on the Colonial League side.
Four players were awarded scholarships for their service in their respective communities: Pleasant Valley's Dana McAllister, Bethlehem Catholic's Marisa Iannelli, Easton's Matt Semanick and Palmer.
