Girls fall to Parkland
Northampton's softball season is over, and all-in-all, it was a pretty good season.
The Konkrete Kids defending District 11 4A champs fell 5-3 to Parkland in this year's semifinals and finished the season with a 17-7 record.
Coach Kevin Mann's Kids went 10-4 in the Lehigh Valley Conference and wound up losing to Parkland 10-0 in the league's semifinals.
Then after beating Easton and Liberty in district play, the Northampton girls lost to Parkland for the fourth time this year.
Considering unbeaten Parkland eventually won the district title with a 6-1 win over Pleasant Valley, Northampton's season was really better than most people expected. Northampton's seven losses came against eventual LVC and District 11 opponents four to Parkland, a 5-3 loss to LVC South titlist Emmaus, 7-4 loss to LVC East champ Liberty, and a 2-1 loss to Mountain Valley Conference champion Pleasant Valley.
Northampton had only four seniors Taylor Kerbacher, Bri Dalton, Leandra Sterner, and Hannah Peters but the Konkrete Kids stood out as a real team. A pair of freshmen handled the pitching duties Gillian Muthard and Taylor Keeney. They were outstanding in that they filled the shoes that Marly Laubach wore last year when she was the LVC's most valuable player.
Also playing key roles were juniors Kendel Reed, Amber Saylor, Sam Frey, Ali Reppert, Kasey Frey, and Rachel Heimbach. Sophomores Auria Enright, Emily Schwartz, and Abby Weslosky filled out the roster and all played important roles.
In Northampton's 5-3 loss to Parkland in the district semis, Sterner and Peters singled home two first-inning runs, but Parkland responded with four in its half of the first.
After scoring once in the second, the Trojans had to hold off the Kids' comeback. Hits by Sterner and Peters and a wild pitch led to Northampton's third run in the fourth and the Kids had two runners on base in the seventh when winning pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer shut them down.
