Boys fall to Mounties

Northampton head coach Mick Sugra knew his team likely would be embroiled in a pitchers' duel Monday afternoon that wouldn't involve many runs, and he wasn't disappointed.

Unfortunately, his team wasn't on the winning side.

Stroudsburg pitcher Dillon Dunne limited the Konkrete Kids to three hits and helped his team to a 2-0 victory in the opening-round of the PIAA District 11 Class AAAA playoffs. With the defeat, Northampton ended its season with an overall 10-11 record.

The host team pushed across a run in the second against Northampton senior starter Joey Wittreich and added a run in the sixth.

Evan Grube, Will Stackhouse, and Shane Astor each had a hit for the Kids. Wittreich tossed a five-hitter in his outing and he finished with a 7-4 record overall.

"Joey (Wittreich) threw a heckuva game," said Sugra. "I couldn't be happier with the way Joey (Wittreich) pitched this season. He definitely was our rock all season. He was very consistent, and he kept us in games that he lost.

"He truly deserves a lot of credit and he'll be missed."

Sugra believed his team would get the timely hits.

"We knew this was going to be a strong pitched game. They got the big hits when they needed to and deserved to win. We had runners in scoring position and couldn't get the big hit when we needed them."

With the majority of his team coming back next season, Sugra expects the underclassmen to take a cue from the seniors and advance to the next level. Along with playing in summer leagues, the majority of the K-Kids will be playing in the fall as well.

"The seniors did a great job for us and they will be missed for their leadership," he said. "We had a number of sophomores who really stepped it up for us this year. We can only hope they all will come back and get better next season."
