Kids Swim Club shines at Silver Championship Meet

During the last weekend in March, the Kids Swim Club led by head Coach Bill Walakovits traveled to the University of Delaware in Newark for the US Swimming Mid-Atlantic Region Silver Championship meet.

There were 16 swimmers from the age group swim club who qualified for this championship event, which spanned three days and included morning preliminary races and afternoon and evening final events.

Highlights of the three-day meet included strong performances by Jack Heffelfinger and Matthew Greer in the boys 11-12 age group, Trinity Schoeneberger in the girls 11-12 age group and Autumn Kidulic in the girls 13-14 age group.

Heffelfinger advanced to the final round in five out of his six events, achieving personal best times in each of those events, including 1:08.75 in the 100 backstroke and 32.36 in the 50 backstroke.

Greer also had a strong meet as he advanced to finals in three events, including the 50 backstroke where he swam a personal best 34.96.

Among the girls performances, Schoeneberger advanced to finals in three events including the 200 backstroke (2:33.33) and Kidulic advanced to finals in two of her three qualifying events, including the 100 breast stroke (1:18.16).

Among other notable swims for the boys 11-12 age group included the 200 freestyle final for swimmers Jack Kennedy (2:21.70) and DJ Fragano (2:30.54) and the 100 breaststroke final for Ben Lehman (1:21.33).

In the boys 13-14 age group, Nick Lehman swam a 2:46.07 in the 200 breaststroke final and the girls 13-14 age group saw great performances from Molly Nagle in the 100 butterfly final (1:13.94) and Mia Molnar in the 200 breaststroke final (2:58.03).

Overall the meet was a success for Northampton's US Swim squad and a great culminating event to the short course season.

Reflecting on the weekend events, Walakovits seemed pleased with the team's performance.

"We had eight swimmers make it to finals Saturday night, and 12 swimmers make it to finals Sunday night," explained Walakovits. "I am so proud of the way the kids handled such a long weekend - they were able to not only drop time in the morning events, but in the evening as well. It is a testament to their hard work and their dedication to the training."

The Kids Swim Club begins training for their Long Course season this month with upcoming US Swim meets at Franklin Marshall College, Bucknell University and Penn State University in May and June.
