LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Kids lose gold, but make their mark in Hershey

Northampton's weekend in Hershey may not have ended with any gold medals, but it did reestablish some of the K-Kids rich wrestling tradition.

Dan Moran (106) and Zach Valley (126) both reached the final round of wrestling Saturday night at the Giant Center, but both came away with silver medals, as Northampton medaled four of their five wrestlers to reinvigorate the program.

That feeling was mute for the likes of Moran and Valley, who had to deal with the pain of suffering finals defeat, but head coach Seth Lisa understands that the groundwork has been laid for good things to come.

"Our guys have done great this entire season," Lisa said. "You torture them day in and day out in practice, sometimes you don't get the success that everybody wants or what they want, but at the end of the day, we had a great postseason, we had a great state tournament and I'm as glad as can be for these guys."

Moran (37-7) suffered a 7-6 defeat to returning state champion Devin Brown (37-0) of Franklin Regional to give the Northampton freshman a dose of disappointment to end his rookie campaign.

The loss was difficult for Moran, but it also gave him a sense of motivation to return to the state finals his sophomore year.

"It's a great experience and I'm going to work even harder next year to get back here," Moran said. "He's [Brown] a tough kid and it was a one-point match that could have went either way. He got a couple of early takedowns and it took me a little to get into the match. I just have to work harder and get back here next year to win gold. I still have three more shots."

For Valley, he closed his Northampton career with a 5-1 loss to Cannon McMillan's Dalton Macri in the finals.

Valley struggled to muster offense against Macri, who lost in last year's state finals.

"We knew he [Macri] had a high pace and he was very good in the front head-lock," Lisa said of Northampton's strategy in the finals. "We defended pretty well for awhile and we stuck to the gameplan and he got the early takedown in the first down and Zach had to go for broke late in the match."

Valley ends his season at 40-4, along with a district and regional championship. It's not the way Valley or Lisa had envisioned the night to end, but his coach knows he came a long way from the time he was a freshman.

"I was an assistant Zach's freshman year, so I got to watch Zach and Bobby [Fehr] all four years," Lisa said. "Zach took a lot of lumps his freshman year and just from that moment, you saw how much he cared about the sport. He was on a roll this year and I'm very proud of him for what he accomplished this season."

Senior Bobby Fehr (37-5) took seventh at 160-pounds following a 3-2 win over Central Mountain's Chad Reese in the consolation round. Michael Scheetz (113) was the other K-Kid to place in Hershey, as he finished in sixth following a loss to Parkland's Jacob Lizak after getting pinned in the consolation round in 1:38. Scheetz finished the season at 28-9.

Todd Hetrick (132) was bounced from the tournament after going 0-2 in the first day of action, as he wrapped up his junior year at 33-11.
