Girls fall in state playoffs
It was just one of those nights Tuesday for Northampton's girls' basketball team.
The Konkrete Kids' season came to an end as North Penn trounced Northampton 73-45 in a PIAA Eastern quarterfinal at Souderton High School.
Coach Jeff Jacksits' squad finished the season with 15-13 record, while North Penn (the District 1 champion) continues play and will meet WC Rustin Friday in the East semifinals.
Northampton, District 11's No. 3 team, knocked off District 2 champion Wallenpaupack 52-46 last Friday to earn the right to meet North Penn.
North Penn, ranked No. 1 in the state in some polls, moved to 26-3 with the win and was led by four players - Erin Maher, Mikaela Giuliani, Vicky Tumasz and Sam Carangi.
Senior Leandra Sterner led Northampton with 13 points - scoring 10 in the second period. Kayla Csencsits hit on three three-pointers for nine points while seniors Zeniyah Sanders, Erica Filipoviits, Amber Farnholtz and Autumn Klucsarits also finished their high school careers.
Northampton, which ended regular season play with an 11-11 record, wound up going 4-2 in postseason play - which was a great accomplishment for an underrated team.
Against Wallenpaupack, Sterner and Csencsits led the way with 19 and 16 points, respectively, while freshman Aja Blount had nine points and 16 rebounds.
Against North Penn Tuesday, Northampton ran off 10-straight points for a 10-3 lead, but North Penn recovered for a 17-14 lead after one period.
Then in the second period North Penn ran off 12-straight points to break a 22-22 tie and led 34-22 before Sterner hit a jumper with two seconds remaining.
From there, it was all North Penn as the Maidens opened the second half with 14 straight points.
