Tough loss for girls vs. PHS
It was a nail-biter at the end as Parkland edged Northampton 45-43 Tuesday night in a District 11 Class 4A semifinal game at Allen.
The Trojans' Nadine Ewald sank a layup on a backdoor screen to snap a 43-43 tie with six seconds remaining to wrap up the win.
But, all is not lost as the Konkrete Kids are still alive for a spot in the PIAA state tournament and will face Pleasant Valley Friday night at Stroudsburg at 6 p.m. Pleasant Valley lost to top-seeded Pocono Mountain West in the Tuesday's other semifinal.
Northampton, which went ahead 20-18 on Ali Reppert's third three-pointer at the 4:32 mark of the second quarter, held on to the lead until Eric Bross hit a three-pointer with 1:21 left in the game. Bross's shot gave Parkland a 43-42 lead, but Northampton's Zeniyah Sanders tied it at 43-43 with a foul shot at the 1:04 mark.
Northampton's biggest lead was 32-23 on Aja Blount's second straight layup at the 5:41 mark in the fourth period, but the Trojans battled back after the Kids took a 42-38 lead on Leandra Sterner's jump shot at the 2:21 mark.
Bross made it 42-40 and followed with her three-pointer before Sanders' foul shot and Ewald's game-winner.
Sterner was Northampton's top scorer with 15 points - 13 in the first half - and Blount added 10 with Reppert winding up with 10 as well. Bross led Parkland with 13 and Ewald and Olivia Brown each had 10. Blount also had 10 rebounds for the Kids.
Coach Jeff Jacksits' squad reached the semifinals by downing East Stroudsburg South 60-46 and knocking off defending District 11 champion Nazareth 38-35 in another nail-biter.
Against ESS, Northampton (now 13-12) took the lead in the second quarter and never looked back as Sterner set the pace with 19 points. Kayla Csencsits had 15 and Blount added 11.
Then against Nazareth, Northampton grabbed the lead 36-35 on two of Csencsits' foul shots and clinched the win on a very unusual play.
With Northampton taking ball after a Nazareth turnover with 15 seconds left, a Nazareth player intercepted the throw-in pass and dribbled in for an uncontested layup. But, the Blue Eagle's shot was in Northampton's basket to give the Kids a 38-35 edge with six seconds remaining.
Sterner was again high for Northampton with 15 points, while Csencsits had 13.
