Girls qualify
It took 22 games, but Northampton's girls' basketball team made it to the District 11 Class 4A tournament again.
The Konkrete Kids routed Stroudsburg 48-37 Saturday and clinched a District 11 spot with an 11-11 overall record. It's the Kids eighth-straight berth in the district tournament.
Coach Jeff Jacksits' team, which won five of their last seven games, finished 6-8 in the Lehigh Valley Conference after tough losses to Parkland (40-38) and Nazareth (50-43).
However, Northampton, which could be seeded sixth or seventh in the 11-team district tournament, could be the team to watch out for.
Jacksits said, "Our close games with Parkland and Nazareth show we can play with the best."
Parkland and Nazareth finished 1-2 in the LVC's north division to earn LVC playoff spots.
"Our LVC games were down-to-the-wire," said Jacksits. "But we've got to stop making mistakes at crucial times."
Northampton led all the way against Stroudsburg in a nonleague game that was originally scheduled Monday, Feb. 3, but was postponed by snow.
Three girls hit double figures against the Mountaineers with Leandra Sterner getting 15, Kayla Csencsits 11, and Aja Blount 10. Erica Filipovits added another eight and Zeniyah Sanders had four.
Against Nazareth, Csencsits was the high scorer with 16 - hitting on four three-pointers - and Sterner had 11 with Blount scoring seven.
In the Parkland loss, no kid had double figures, but Sterner had nine and Csencsits and Filipovits each had eight with Blount scoring seven.
"Against Nazareth we played strong for three or three-and-a-quarter periods, but slacked a bit in the third period when we were outscored 13-5. Against Parkland we led 31-28 going into the fourth, but lost by two foul shots (by Brynne Bross) in the final 17 seconds," said Jacksits.
"We'll be ready, no matter where we're seeded," concluded Jacksits, who has a 163-96 record and two District 11 crowns in 10 years at the helm of the Kids.
