Kids go 3-1 at Duals

The recent Konkrete Duals saw the host team go 3-1 in competition with wins over W.C. Rustin (33-30), Pittston (66-6) and Wyoming Area (60-3) and the lone loss coming to Spring Ford in a 37-25 match.

Individually, Bobby Fehr, Todd Hetrick, Jason Kocher, Dan Moran and Zach Valley all went 4-0 on the day. Josh Coleman, Michael Scheetz and Devon Turner were 3-1 and George Stilgenbauer went 2-0 with Cade Moisey going 2-1.

Against Rustin, the Kids trailed 30-21 heading into the final two bouts. Zach Valley picked up an easy pin in just :39 over Gerrett Kenny at 126 pounds to pull Northampton within three points. In the final bout of the match, Todd Hetrick pinned James Spaniak at 1:28 of the first period to pick up six team points and give Northampton the slim advantage for the win. Northampton had lost three points earlier in the match when Alex Quaglieri was called for flagrant misconduct in the 195 pound bout that not only gave Rustin six points for the win by disqualification, but deducted three additional points from the Konkrete Kids score.

"Overall, it was a good day," said Northampton coach Seth Lisa. "Spring Ford is a tough team and I thought we gave them a good match, but had a couple key losses that gave them the edge."

Northampton qualified for districts as the fifth seed and will face Whitehall Thursday in the first round of the tournament, which begins at Stroudsburg. The winner will advance to the quarter-finals and a match against fourth seeded Pocono Mountain East.

One change to the tournament this season has the tournament becoming a double-elimination tournament after the first round of matches. Teams that lose in the quarter-final rounds or later will move into a consolation bracket, also known as wrestlebacks. (See above story for more)

"There's good and bad about both ways of doing it," said Lisa about the changes to the tournament. "I'm sure some teams will feel they were helped by the new system and some will feel it hurt them."

Last season, Northampton beat Emmaus in the first round of the district tournament before losing to Easton, the eventual champion. Stroudsburg holds this year's top seed and will have a first round bye before wrestling the winner of the Nazareth and Emmaus match in the quarterfinals.
