Nicholas enjoys time with Kids
Every time he steps on a high school basketball court this winter, Tyler Nicholas truly can appreciate the moment.
Last season, Nicholas spent the winter playing for the Bath CYO program. It was a result of being cut from a program for the second time in his playing career. He was one of the final cuts of the NHS program last winter and was also cut in eighth grade.
This time around -like the last Nicholas knew he would be back. Nicholas didn't play with the high school team during the summer, but he emerged this winter to share time at the point guard position.
Still, it is a memory that can quickly resurface.
"It was frustrating and devastating," recalled Nicholas. "But it happened before, and I knew I could come back from it. I spent anytime I could working on my ball handling, dribbling and passing. I felt pretty confident coming back out for the team."
He did survive and re-established himself. Nicholas has been sharing time at the point with Basem Azar and the duo has been among the leading scorers on the team as well.
"He has worked very hard," said head coach Coy Stampone. "Tyler (Nicholas) knew he needed to work on some things, and to his credit, he did. He has been steady out there for us this year."
Nicholas has been searching for ways to keep his team consistent, too. Entering this week, the Kids were saddled with an eight-game losing streak, their latest defeat to Pocono Mountain West, 73-59, Jan. 18.
"We just have to keep playing for four quarters," said Nicholas. "It seems like we have trouble playing in the second half and the final quarter. We all feel like we have the talent here to compete with any team in the league.
"We just have to be able to finish."
Nicholas isn't ready to end the game he began playing at the age of four due to the influence of his parents Mark and Ghada. He has plans to attend Kutztown University next fall, but he is undecided about his major.
When he isn't playing basketball, Nicholas likes to play sports and has developed an affinity toward golf, a sport he continues to spend more time playing. He also spends some time playing tennis whenever he can. Besides sports, Nicholas is a member of the school's business and math clubs.
Nicholas admittedly doesn't know what he wants to do with his future, but he plans to concentrate solely on his present state. It is a state on basketball court that relish with each practice and game.
