Northampton Area Food Bank receives Golden Deeds award

The Northampton Exchange Club has added another chapter to its storied "Book of Golden Deeds," by honoring the Northampton Area Food Bank as a 2012 Golden Deeds recipient.

Rev. Martin Nuscher, president of the borough-based food bank, was awarded a plaque on behalf of the food bank and signed the register of the Book of Golden Deeds at a ceremony Aug. 25 at the Northampton Memorial Community Center. Many former Golden Deeds recipients attended the event honoring the food bank.

Exchange Club President Kim Belletti made the presentation to Nuscher and the food bank.

The event marked the 58th presentation of the Golden Deeds award, which began in 1951. Dr. M.G. Miller was the first honoree. Other honorees include a diverse group of individuals, all of whom made a noteworthy contribution in other's lives and in the community and region.

Businesses and industry have also been recognized, including Universal Atlas Company in 1966, Northampton Athletic Association in 1980, Tri Boro Sporstmen Club in 1986 and Richard C. Wolfe of the Roxy Theatre in 2009.

During a PowerPoint presentation, Nuscher discussed the history of the food bank, a nonprofit volunteer organization formed in 1992 by several local churches. The food bank serves residents of the Northampton Area School District and adjacent areas. The new facility on Canal Street opened in 2007. The food bank previously operated from a garage.

Nuscher reported the food bank serves between 400 and 500 families each month. It also has a special program for seniors.
