More businesses sponsor banners displayed throughout borough

According to a report issued at a recent borough council meeting, Main Street is looking fine.

Unlike some towns with a business district that have trees lining their streets, Northampton has opted for a different approach.

The new orange and black banners, attached to light posts on Main Street and in other areas, such as Laubach Avenue and 21st Street, have been so popular that business owners are sponsoring the banners."The public works crew has installed 24 additional banners on Main Street and 21st Street," Borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported at the Aug. 16 meeting. "These are the Northampton 'Community of Unity' banners. They have been sponsored by various businesses. I have sent out letters to additional businesses that might be interested in sponsoring banners."

The banners in the town's business district compliment the Victorian lamp posts that line both sides of the street.

The downtown triangle also has an attractive setting which has received numerous compliments.

"In case you haven't noticed, the planter that is located at Main and Laubach has been doing extremely well this year. It is maintained by Barbara Miller and her staff from Bob's Flower Shop," Zarayko said.

Throughout the year, the borough has designed and constructed street ornaments to display on light poles on Main Street, such as the green shamrock for St. Patrick's Day, bunnies, eggs and other decor for Easter, patriotic decor and the lighted Christmas decorations which bring visitors to the borough.

Events also are held on Main Street, such as the Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce street fair, which has received council's approval. Zarayko reported the street fair will take place Saturday, Sept. 8.

The annual Jack Frost Parade, held mostly on Main Street in October, is sponsored by the Northampton Exchange Club.
