Concern remains over use of canal park

While the crowds at Canal Park have not been as large as before, Northampton Borough Council was informed littering and the use of alcoholic beverages continue to be an issue.

At the Aug. 16 meeting of council, Canal Road resident Michael Kuzio submitted a number of pictures which he said demonstrate that problems at the site are ongoing. He said the photos were taken Aug. 13, just after the weekend. Kuzio said a picnic bench was moved from the lawn to near the river.

"Eliminate picnics," Kuzio offered as a solution to the issue.

Despite borough ordinances and the posting of signs banning open fires, fires are still being started by park visitors, he said, citing the photos as proof.

Charred wood on the parking lot is a concern, said Kuzio and neighbor Donna Persing.

Persing also brought photos of debris left by the crowds, said to be citizens from out of town.

"Imagine how much [litter] is floating down the river," Persing said. She added the beer is being brought to the park in coolers.

While no one is opposed to seeing people enjoy the park, regulations still must be followed.

Kuzio praised the police for their presence, saying when Police Chief Ron Morey is at the park, children gather around him.

Council President John Yurish thanked Kuzio and Persing for airing their concerns with council.

Council members said park regulations will continue to be enforced this year and officials will see if changes need to be made for next summer.
