Emmaus council swears in new fire lieutenant

Emmaus Borough Council approved the hiring of a full-time paramedic and recognized a new fire department lieutenant during its Nov. 2 meeting. Council also received updates on borough projects, finances and personnel matters.

Fire Department Lt. Logan Schwartz was sworn in during the meeting, formally marking his appointment to the leadership position. A large crowd of local first responders attended to watch Schwartz take the oath. Council also approved the appointment of Alexandria Kern-Hickey as a full-time paramedic.

In other business, council accepted the resignation of Emmaus Police Sgt. Kevin Schmidt and acknowledged his enrollment in the borough’s Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP. The program allows eligible employees to continue working while retirement benefits accumulate before retirement.

In addition, council received an update on the metal roof project at the 1803 House. The Friends of the 1803 House reported construction of the new roof is complete. However, the project exceeded initial cost estimates after additional deterioration was discovered once work began.

A 2027 event request from the Emmaus Farmers’ Market was referred to committee for review. As in previous years, the market is expected to operate Sunday mornings at the Emmaus Triangle.

Council also approved Resolution 2026-31, authorizing payment of bills totaling $1,624,092.99. Members also reviewed October revenue, expense and budget performance reports. Emmaus Borough/Upper Mildford Joint Environmental Council reports included September and October meeting minutes from the Joint Environmental Advisory Council.

The next borough council meeting is scheduled for Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.
