LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay closes out summer concert series

The Coplay summer concert series ended Sept. 23 with its final mini-concert with a talented, solo artist who provided quality music throughout the three-hour concert. The weather was autumn-like with a cool breeze throughout the concert.

Roy Ramos is an acoustic singer/songwriter and music therapist from Tobyhanna. His musical career spans three decades performing in the Poconos, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and got his first guitar at age 3 from his father, who was a salsa band leader. Ramos studied music and performance at the State University of New York at New Platz as a member of the Class of 1980.

During his career, he has produced four albums — “Grandes Exitos Latinos,” “Radio Hits,” “American Standards” and “Way Down in Jamaica.”

A regular performer with his multicolored guitars at local venues and festivals, resorts, civic functions and community events throughout the Poconos garnered Ramos the nickname “Pocono Roy Ramos.”

As a music therapist, Ramos has a continuous schedule of music therapy programs for hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and rehabilitation centers across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He also collaborates with regional organizations like the Community Foundation of Monroe County and Monroe County Meals on Wheels.

Because of the chilly weather, attendance at the mini-concert was muted. Former Coplay Town Watch leader Karl Unger arrived on his bike to mingle with friends and enjoy the music.

Longtime Coplay resident Rose Huber and Melissa Hackman sat together on a bench enjoying the music. Hackman noted her family lore indicates she is a distant relative of the late movie star Gene Hackman.

Also attending the event were Ethyl Lavenburg, Councilman Dean Hermany and his wife, Dae, council Vice President Todd Santoroski, pool manager Rachael Geiger, former mayor Joseph Bundra and Coplay Councilman Mick Dee.

Rich Tomolovski and Jeff Steiner, of Coplay, attended, along with a member of the Simon family from Cherry Street. Kim Minjack and her husband, Chris, of Coplay, were there, among others who clearly enjoyed the music.

The concert was a nice community event that closed another successful summer concert series at the well-maintained community plaza at Second and Chestnut streets.
