LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

American Classic combines racing, family fun and fireworks

The Valley Preferred Cycling Center’s American Classic on July 3 offered more than world-class track cycling. Fans celebrating the Independence Day weekend enjoyed live music by Philadelphia Funk Authority, family activities, bounce houses, food vendors and a fireworks display that capped off the evening’s racing. The event was part of the venue’s America250 celebration recognizing the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

On the track, the spotlight was on Magnus Jamieson, of New Zealand, and Dakota Stein, of the United States, who battled throughout several events in the men’s competition.

Stein won the Flying Mile in 1 minute, 38 seconds with an average speed of 58.7 kph. Troy Sanders rounded out the podium in third place.

Jamieson captured the Miss-and-Out race, outlasting Ryan Jastrab and Andrew Dudle. He also turned in a dominant performance in the Point-a-Lap race, winning 12 consecutive sprint laps to finish with 32 points.

Jamieson added victories in both the Open Longest Lap and the 30-Lap Prime Race.

Although Stein claimed the Flying Mile title, Jamieson dominated the evening’s Friday Night Under the Lights Rider of the Year competition.

Stein continues to hold a narrow lead in the season-long Rider of the Year standings with 50 points, followed by Jamieson with 47.

Jessica Chong was nearly unbeatable in the women’s competition. She won the Scratch Race, dominated the Point-a-Lap race and completed the sweep by capturing the Women’s Prime Race.

Joshua Fredericks won the Junior Men’s Scratch Race, while Elijah James claimed victory in the Junior Men’s Longest Lap.

The combination of international racing, family entertainment and fireworks made the American Classic one of the summer’s signature events at the Trexlertown velodrome.
